Safe
Safe – this means we looked for evidence that people were protected from abuse and avoidable harm.
At our last assessment we rated this key question as requires improvement and the provider was in breach of the legal regulation in the safe management of medicines. At this assessment the rating has improved to good as the provider had made most of the improvements needed to ensure people were getting their medicines safely. They were no longer in breach of legal regulation in relation to the safe management of medicines. This meant people were safe and protected from avoidable harm.

Medicines optimisation
The service did not always make sure medicines were being stored safely and were consistently documented as required.
At our last assessment medicines were not stored safely. At this assessment we found stock cupboards remained locked and secure for people’s tablets. However, some improvements were needed to the safe storage of topical creams. People’s topical creams were not stored securely in the medicines room or in their rooms. This meant there was a risk of topical creams in people’s rooms being accessed by others.
We observed all medicines had been recorded as being administered. However, there were inconsistencies with the recording of topical creams. We found 2 people needed their topical creams confirming on 2 occasions on their Medicines Administration Record (MAR) chart. For these 2 people their daily electronic record confirmed they had received their topical cream. We raised this with the registered manager who confirmed the recording of all medicines should be on the person’s paper MAR chart. Following our assessment the registered manager confirmed actions they were taking.
Documentation was now in place to give staff details on where people had topical creams applied and when. This was in line with best practice. Improvements had been made where people were administering their own medicines as this medicine was now securely stored in their rooms.
We observed staff administer people’s medicines safely and sign following administering these medicines. One person told us they have their medicines left for them to take. This poses a risk that the person might not take their medicines or someone else may access it instead. We raised this with the registered manager for them to follow up.
Senior staff and nursing staff had medicine competency checks completed, and training provided. The registered manager confirmed following our assessment all staff who administer training were going to be provided refresher training.
