Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. People and relatives felt they were treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. A relative told us, “It’s very good here, the staff are very kind and thoughtful”. During our site visit, we saw staff were kind to people and when they asked for support, staff were available and offered help. We saw staff engaged with people, about what was important to them.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. People felt their individual needs and preferences were considered. One person told us, “I get the care I want”. There were systems in place to ensure people were treated as individuals. People and those important to them participated in regular reviews of their care to ensure the information was up to date and reflective of their current needs.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were offered choices. One person told us, “They wake me up about 8am to8.30am and I go to bed when I want to, about 10pm. I like to watch TV before I go to bed.” We saw people were offered choices, including, if they wanted to remain in their rooms or if they wanted to go to the communal areas, where they would like to sit and what activities they would like to participate in. There were systems in place to ensure people had adequate choices, this was expressed through a ‘resident of the day’ programme, where people could reflect on their care and preferences. Care plans reflected the likes and dislikes and choices people made.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. People had the opportunity to express their views through meetings, reviews and the ‘resident of the day’ programme. When changes occurred to people’s needs information was shared with staff through the handover process. One staff member told us, “Its very thorough, we talk about the residents and what’s happened.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The registered manager shared the importance of their workforce and how they considered their wellbeing. They spoke about the importance of working as a team and ensuring they involved themselves as part of this team. They gave examples how they had given staff opportunities for progression including into the registered nurse’s role. Staff we spoke with felt supported by the registered manager, and said it was a good place to work. There were systems in place to consider staff wellbeing and staff felt valued by the support they received.
