Caring
We assessed 1 quality statement in the caring key question. The score for this quality statement has been combined with the scores from the last inspection, which was good. Though the assessment of this quality statement indicated some areas for improvement, the key question remains good. People and their relatives were generally positive about how staff cared for them. Staff were noted to treat people with kindness, but further work was required to ensure staff promoted people’s privacy and dignity in how they cared for people.
This service scored 70 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Kindness, compassion and dignity
Some people told us staff didn’t always respect their privacy and walked into their bedrooms without knocking or announcing themselves. Comments included, “Sometimes I just need peace and quiet and staff just come in” and “Often the carers will just come in and wake me up.” People did however tell us staff were generally kind and caring in their approach to them. For example, a relative shared, “[Person] is very happy here. All the staff are lovely.”
Staff told us they would always speak to people respectfully and during personal care would talk with people, letting them know what they are doing.
A professional told us they had observed staff were kind and spoke with people in a respectful manner. They felt staff knew people well.
We observed staff speaking to people in a caring manner. However, care was task-orientated with minimal personal interaction or opportunities to increase stimulus. We also observed occasions where people’s dignity was compromised in how staff cared for them.
