Our view of the service
Springfield Care Home is a ‘care home’ providing personal care and support to people over 18. At the time of the assessment, the service was supporting 35 people with their personal care needs. Springfield Care Home was last rated ‘Requires Improvement’ (published 09 August 2023. The report was published following CQC’s old inspection approach using key lines of enquiry (KLOEs), prompts and ratings characteristics. This assessment has been completed following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) new approach to assessment; Single Assessment Framework (SAF). We undertook this assessment following concerns found at the previous inspection which was rated requires improvement. We assessed a total of 105 quality statements from the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions. The management team had made improvements and was no longer in breach of regulations. The registered manager had implemented new systems and ensured safeguards were in place to protect people from improper treatment and improvements were embedded in staff practice. Staff had safeguarding training and explained to us how they would report any concerns they witnessed. Staff were confident that the management team would investigate any issues appropriately. Staff supported people who had capacity to make decisions about risk. Risk assessments were completed to promote independence, wellbeing and support people to make their own choices. Where people did not have capacity, all necessary actions had been carried out under the Mental Capacity Act including making appropriate applications under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). New care plans were in the process of being introduced and some had been completed. They were clear, comprehensive and provided guidance to staff to keep people safe. The registered manager ensured there were sufficient, safely recruited staff on duty, who had received training to meet peoples’ needs. Incidents or accidents were reviewed.
