People's individual preferences were reflected in how care was provided. People told us they enjoyed the activities provided at the service. A person said, “I enjoy the food and the activities are very good.” People and their relatives were active partners in their care. A relative told us, “Activities at Clairleigh are second to none. [Staff] do a fantastic job and my [loved one] has a better social life than I do. Honestly can't fault the activities, huge and varied range and I have had many, many fun afternoons. Relatives are always welcome. From musicians and choirs to animals to arts and crafts, keep fit, singalongs, quizzes, board games. Even a Clairleigh awards ceremony just recently.” Another relative commented, “We have attended two wonderful summer fetes where so much effort has gone in to producing an event that provides great joy for both residents and their relatives. Days when we can all come together and make special memories with our loved ones. These days reinforce the great sense of community that’s has been developed at Clairleigh. It is not just the summer fete that instils this sense of community. It is all the recreational activities and entertainments which take place at the home on a regular basis. We feel so very fortunate that our [loved one] and all the other residents are able to receive such a high standard and stimulating variety of activities and entertainment. There are regular entertainers visiting from individual singers to choirs, there are concerts, visits from the local schoolchildren and talks of interest from local experts. There are flower arranging workshops, keep fit classes, day trips arranged for those who can travel and all sorts of stimulating daily activities like quizzes and themed days when the day room is decorated and there is food to match an occasion. The activities and entertainment team are excellent.”

A staff member told us, “The activities for people are very good here, there is a sensory room that people enjoy. The activities coordinator is so good, there is always something going on every day.” An officer from the local authority that commissions services from the provider told us the activities and engagement at the service are good. The activities team really think outside the box about how to make activities reflective of people’s individual needs. A staff member told us how they promoted people’s independence. They encouraged people to do as much of their personal care they could for themselves for example wash or get dressed without support from staff. They told us how they supported people to make choices. After providing people with personal care, they offered choices of clothing so people could let them know which items they wanted to wear. They also offered people different options of food and drink at mealtimes so that people could choose what they wanted to eat.

People’s care plans included detailed information about their care and support needs and life history. People's diverse needs were assessed and supported by staff. Assessments included people's needs relating to any protected characteristics in line with the Equality Act and recorded information about people's relationships, cultural preferences, and religious beliefs. The service employed an activities coordinator. We observed them facilitating an activity session in the garden during the morning. A church service was held in the afternoon. Other activities observed during our assessment included cake baking, a visiting pet therapist and a birthday party. There was an activities plan in place at the service. Activities on offer to people included Pride arts and crafts, keep fit, pet therapy (visiting dog and Shetland pony), quizzes, a day at the races, murder mystery evening, and a Reggae Ska party. Upcoming dates for people’s diary included a Black History celebration day in October, a Halloween Party and a Bollywood and Diwali party in November.
