Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 26 February 2025 – 6 March 2025. The service is a residential care home providing support to older people living with dementia and mental health conditions.
At our last inspection people were not always receiving safe care and treatment. We served the provider with a warning notice instructing them when they needed to be compliant with legislation. We undertook this inspection to check they had met the requirements of the warning notice. The service had made improvements and is no longer in breach of regulations. Staff now assessed and mitigated risks safely. The provider had improved training for staff and people received care and support from skilled and knowledgeable staff to meet their needs. Medicines were now safely managed. The service had a good learning culture and managers investigated incidents thoroughly. People were protected and kept safe. People were involved in decisions about their care. Legislation to protect people who did not have the capacity to make their own decisions was followed.
The service supported staff wellbeing. Staff told us they were well supported, felt valued and enjoyed their work.
The service was easy to access and worked to eliminate discrimination. People received fair and equal care and treatment.
The governance of the service was now effective. This meant people received safe and high-quality care. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and told us they were treated equally. The service worked with the local community to deliver the best possible care and outcomes for people.
People's experience of this service
Some people could not directly tell us about their experience at Hunters Lodge. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This approach showed staff treated people with dignity and respect, offered choices and consistently interacted positively with them.
Relatives were positive about the home and the care their relative received. Comments included, “I couldn’t have asked for a better home for my father. The best thing about it are the staff, they are brilliant.”, “I can’t fault them [staff], they have been amazing. There are plenty of carers, they are little rays of sunshine, they are always on the ball.”, “I give them 100% for their care.”, “[Name] is living her best life there.”, “I recommend them highly.” And “They [staff] are really good with my mother; I can’t thank them enough for how they help me as well.”
