Independence, choice and control
People told us they were encouraged to be independent. One person told us, “We have choice. Each day they ask me what I would like for my lunch.” We observed staff respecting people’s choices and supporting people’s wishes. For example, the registered manager had bought different food from the daily menu options as one person wished to have something specific that was not typically served on the menu.
Staff told us how they encourage independence. One staff member said, “The more able residents, we promote independence, but we still do not attempt to take that away from some less independent residents. It does not matter if they have capacity or not, we will ask them what they want to wear or food choices. With activities we always tailor the activities to the residents and (staff member’s name) will go into their room and the singer will go outside or into their rooms so everyone can hear, we promote independence whenever we can.”
We observed staff treating people with dignity and respect. Staff were observed offering people choice for example with food choices and where they wanted to spend their day.
We spoke to the registered manager about providing choice and promoting independence. They told us they wanted to make sure people have a choice and their home comforts. We saw this process whilst we were onsite. The staff had provided a choice of food. A person wanted a meal they would have had at home but was not on the menu. The registered manager ensured the person was able to have this home comfort. People’s preferences, including communication needs and some likes and dislikes were detailed in their care plans.
