Governance, management and sustainability

Score: 3

The service had clear responsibilities, roles, systems of accountability and good governance. They used these to manage and deliver good quality, sustainable care, treatment and support. They act on the best information about risk, performance and outcomes, and share this securely with others when appropriate.

The registered manager demonstrated they had a clear understanding of their responsibilities and were familiar with guidance for providers on meeting the regulations. The registered manager told us, “The importance of good auditing to balance keeping complex residents safe but enabling them to have freedom and independence so Muscliff Nursing Home feels like their home and place of comfort.”

We saw the service had effective governance, management and accountability arrangements in place. We were assured that staff understood their roles and responsibilities and the management team could account for the actions, behaviours and performance of staff. A staff member stated, “We all have our roles, skills we have developed to become champions and it all fits together so residents get the very best care. The registered manager wouldn’t accept anything less and their presence, the way they nurture others makes everybody who walks through the door raise their standards.” Another staff member told us, “Staff want to help and go above and beyond. I help the managers with the audits, I can teach others to do audits now… we promote the involvement of staff for staff to do more and achieve more and this creates excitement.”

Leaders were open and honest with people living in the service and their relatives when things went wrong with their care and provided them with an apology. We saw the management reporting structure was transparent and a relative told us there is a relative champion who can be an extra voice to support people and families if needed.
