Independence, choice and control
The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. We received mixed feedback from people regarding choice and control over their care. Whilst people told us they had a choice of meals and when they received personal care, some people told us there was little to do each day and they often had to wait for staff. One person said, “Sometimes they do drawing but I don't like it, we usually just stare at the TV. I have showers, I had 1 this morning, but I had to wait for it, by the time I had it, breakfast was over with.” Another person said, “Food is fine, I choose what I want. Staff, they are very friendly. I can choose when I have a bath or shower, and we can say no. The staff are kind yes.” Activities co-ordinators were in place, and we observed some activities taking place on the day of our assessment, such as therapy dogs and exercises. However, staff did not always have time to provide meaningful engagement for people and we observed communal areas to be noisy and busy. Signage was in place to assist people to orientate themselves around the service. However, we observed people waiting for staff to assist them to access their rooms to upper floors. Outside areas were in place, including bird feeders, to enable people to sit outside. The service also had a hairdressers on site to allow people to have their hair done if they wished.
