Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff understood how good foot care could help maintain people’s independence. A member of staff told us, “I explain it all to them so they understand. I always ask for consent and explain I’m here to help them with their feet. The very role of our job, helps with people’s mobility and helps with their independence.”

The registered manager said, “The service we provide helps people to maintain their physicality. It provides a holistic service that looks at the whole person. You can tell a lot by people’s feet. The service provides some people with a social outlet, some people may not see anyone else for weeks, so it is a nice support for them.” People chose when they had their footcare appointment and were regularly asked for their views on the service they received. People provided positive views on the service, comments received included, “Very pleasant assistant”, “Always friendly and we have a laugh”, “Assistant is very nice and we have a chat” and “It’s a marvellous service.” The registered manager told us, “Our whole ethos as an organisation is to keep people independent and in their own homes as long as possible and provide them with choice, so we are providing preventative services. We look at people holistically so we are able to direct them to other support services, everything works very in tune with each other, nothing is stand alone.”
