Independence, choice and control
Staff understood the importance of supporting people according to their preferences. Staff gave examples of the choices people were offered, and how their independence was promoted.
Staff fully respected and promoted people’s privacy, dignity and independence. Staff offered personal care discreetly and made sure that people’s dignity was respected. Due to the presence of surveillance cameras as a security measure, there were reminders to staff in the office to remind people of them when walking between the bathroom and their bedroom. The surveillance cameras were appropriately registered, and only the registered manager and nominated individual had access to these recordings.
People’s confidentiality was maintained; records and information about people were kept securely and not left in communal areas.
We observed staff supporting people, in a person-led manner, facilitating the activity rather than taking control. Staff knew how to communicate with the person to ensure they were understood and listened to. If the person wanted to end the conversation or activity this was respected by staff. This also included the person requesting that the inspector leave their property.
