Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders
The home manager told us they were available and had an open-door policy, which meant that people, families and staff could speak to them. The home manager said, “My phone number is available to people, relatives and health professionals if they want to contact me. We also have an on-call service where staff contact management for advice and anytime.” Staff were positive about the home manager. A staff member told us, "[Home manager] is good at their job and wants the best for all. Doing a good job.” Another staff member commented, “The manager is doing fantastic job. If we have a problem, they encourage us to talk to them.” People were positive about the home manager. A person told us, “I’ve made a few complaints and have always been listened to. The home manager will sit down with me and we will write it down. They replied to me by letter and everything is dealt with. You can’t fault them. Another person commented, “I think the home is well run for my needs.”
A home manager was in place who knew the home, people, and staff well. The home manager is registered with the Care Quality Commission. Staff were positive about the management of the home. The home manager had received leadership training as part of their role and told us they were supported.
Freedom to speak up
Systems were in place for staff to raise concerns internally and externally. Staff knew how to use the whistleblowing policy and understood their role and responsibilities of reporting concerns and knew who to go to if they needed to. The home manager told us how they encouraged staff to speak up and said, “We ask staff to complete surveys that they can complete anonymously. Also staff have regular supervisions where they are able to discuss any concerns that they may have. I also do walk arounds where I speak to staff to check all is well.”
A whistleblowing policy was in place that included details on how to raise concerns both internally and externally, which allowed staff freedom to speak up. Staff feedback was also sought as part of supervisions and staff meeting. We saw the provider had a complaints and compliments system in place, which captured feedback from people. The provider addressed all complaints in accordance with the providers policies and procedures.

Everything is managed straight away.” Staff told us they enjoyed working at the home. A staff member told us, “I like working here. I have been here 5 years and I am not going anywhere.” Another staff member commented, “It is a nice place to work, it is mentally demanding, but I enjoy it.”
