People were supported by staff who knew them well and treated them with kindness and compassion. People told us they were always treated with dignity and respect and were made to feel welcome and included in the home.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

People told us they were supported by staff who were kind, compassionate and who treated them with dignity and respect. One person said, “Everyone’s gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. They smile, I feel part of the home.” Another person said, “They [Staff] are very good, they’re all helpful. If you need them, they are always there.”

Staff told us they were encouraged and free to spend to time with people to get to know and understand how people liked to be supported. This ensured people were treated with compassion and their dignity was respected.

Professionals we spoke with did not comment on this area of care or support.

We observed staff supporting people in their chosen way. For example, where people were hard of hearing staff were conscious to ensure they spoke at a level the person could hear or positioned themselves on someone's preferred side where their hearing was better. Care plans contained detailed family and social histories, this supported staff to develop open, trusting and meaningful relationships with people. We saw examples of staff identifying concerns regarding people’s needs in a timely manner as they noticed unusual behaviour from people. For example, one person’s care plan described how the person liked to spend their days and what was important to them. Staff noticed the person was not participating as usual and through talking with the person they identified they had a urinary tract infection and were able to seek support before it developed.
