Shared direction and culture

Score: 3

Management had a clear strategy of improvements and developments which they communicated with staff. There was a new management team within the home who acknowledged it would take time for people and staff to embrace the shared direction of the home, but the deputy manager said, “We have made great progress already, we have open and clear communication, and we are all proud of what we are achieving and the care we are delivering.” Staff supported what the deputy manager told us. Staff described improved communication with managers and clear guidance and responsibilities which help them within their role.

Staff and leaders demonstrated a positive, compassionate, listening culture that promoted trust and understanding between them, and people using the service and was focused on learning and improvement. The management team ensured all staff were fully trained and had an action plan to upskill and promote staff from within to ensure knowledge retention which kept the people within the home safe.

Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders

Score: 3

During our onsite assessment the deputy manager was in charge as the manager was on annual leave. We observed a stable environment despite the managers absence. The deputy manager was extremely knowledgeable about people and staff and knew there needs and support requirements. The deputy manager was skilled at steeping up to cover the requirements of the manager role whilst ensuring they were still visible within the home and available to staff and people as needed.

The provider had management cover for home consistently and received updates and quality management information throughout the week which ensured the management team received appropriate support. We saw the provider regularly communicated with staff in the home in an open and professional way and acknowledged improvements and achievements within the service.
