Independence, choice and control

Score: 4

The provider was exceptional at promoting people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to make choices and be as independent as possible. People were supported in their own bespoke living areas, which included their chosen personal effects. One person said, “I chose how my room is decorated, I am happy with it. I have my own car and enjoy going out. Staff do my shopping for me; I choose what I like to eat.” People had their own menus formulated with them each week and chose food they enjoyed. We saw people had chosen take away meals and a person told us they enjoyed bacon which was crispy, this was seen on the day of the inspection. We also saw plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, snacks and drinks available to people. People were involved in monthly meetings about their support, in which they could raise suggestions and concerns. These could be further improved by adding an action plan, to evidence suggestions had been undertaken. Information was given to people in accessible formats, such as safeguarding information and how people could complain about their care. We observed kind and compassionate interactions between people and staff. We saw people actively seeking out staff, playing games with them and giving staff a hug.
