Independence, choice and control

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Encouraging independence was at the core of the service. Staff supported people to remain well in their own surroundings. A relative said, “The best part is the genuine care and companionship provided. The support makes daily life easier and less stressful, allowing for independence, while knowing help is always available when needed.” Care plans and risk assessments demonstrated the promotion of independence and focused on people’s abilities. Staff told us they understood the importance of supporting people to maintain or regain their independence. A member of staff said, “It is important that we promote people's independence as much as possible because it is their right, it dignifies them, shows respect to the person as an individual. It empowers them to make choices and use their abilities.”
