Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This is the first inspection for this service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People were supported in a dignified and respectful way. People and relatives told us they had good relationships with the staff. We observed interactions between people and staff where people appeared to be in control of their day and relaxed. A relative said, “[Name] is very relaxed with staff, which makes a difference with the activities they do. The staff understand them very well.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People received support that was tailored to their individual needs by staff who knew them well. People’s care plans included their goals and people were supported to work toward and achieve these.

Independence, choice and control

The provider was exceptional at promoting people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People took part in a range of activities of their choice. Relatives said people had a full schedule and were supported to try new activities if they wanted to. People and their relatives told us about how staff were supporting them to learn new skills. People were able to spend time with others that were important to them, and staff supported people to regularly visit relatives. There were monthly residents’ meetings and also individual keywork meetings where people were encouraged and empowered to have their say. The provider had a policy in place on sexuality and relationships which included personalised education and resources relating to consent and understanding different aspects of relationships.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. Staff were always available to respond to people’s needs. A relative said, “The staff are amazing and really attentive; I can't fault them.” We observed interactions between staff and people who use the service and saw that these relationships were caring and compassionate.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff were positive about working for the service and said they felt well supported by the management team and their colleagues. They were able to provide feedback to the managers through team meetings and supervisions. An employee of the month award was used to recognise staff for their work.
