Assessing needs
The service made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. An initial assessment of needs was completed with people and those important to them, documenting their views and preferences for support. Staff reviewed assessments and care plans regularly with people and their relatives, to ensure the support continued to meet their needs and wishes. Staff told us they felt confident they were given enough information to support and care for people safely.

Consent to care and treatment
The service told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering care and treatment. People’s care plans documented their capacity to choose how their care was delivered. These also included how people liked to fill their time. For example, choosing to watch TV with their peers, enjoy quiet time, or going to the pub. One relative shared how despite their relative not being verbally communicative, they were able to use a mixture of sign language and visual aids to be involved in all decisions relating to their daily care.
